Hi! I'm Jack Layton!

I'm the leader of Canada's New Democratic Party (NDP), a party whose principles have been rooted in the great Canadian social-democratic tradition since 1961 (although people generally say we are the inheritors of the old Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation which got going in 1933). Here's some background on our history.

Some say we're the conscience of Canada. We never quite come to power, but a lot of Canada's defining social policy ideas were ours! Our founder, Tommy Douglas (widely considered the father of medicare, mothers' allowances, old age benefits and many other great Canadian Social Welfare ideas) has just been named the Greatest Canadian by the CBC.

So, I'm riding the wave of Canadian heritage here as the current leader of the NDP, and to those who say that the NDP would flush Canada's money down the john, I'd say that it would be better to throw it into affordable child care, basic needs of our citizens and real medicare than to let [info]pm_paul's Fiberal party mail our cheques to their pals. And letting [info]harper2bepm's reform party into power? That's kind of like welcoming in a elitist regime with ultra-rightist leanings with a healthy undercurrent of proscriptive religious hysteria now isn't it?

But enough about my political inheritance. What about me? Well, born in 1950 I'm a runner for sure, but I still try to keep looking young and cool through the magic of my sexy moustache. I have a Ph. D. in Political Sciences (the only Canadian party leader to hold the degree) from York University in Toronto where I studied international investment and methods of controlling it. I served for years on Toronto city council, I've been President of the Association of Canadian Municipalities, and I know how to publish books at the right time to capture the attention of the news media.

I'm fully in support of decriminalizing marijuana. In fact I've called it a wonderful substance on TV! I love it so much that the Canadian Pot Party is thinking of joining US!

Speaking of the news media. I love it. I love to wear bright orange ties, and I love being on camera. My only really awful media experience was the english language debate in the last election. I had a bit of a botox accident on that one, and, boy, I sure looked like a snake oil salesman with my smirky grin as I blabbed on at my bastard honourable opponents.

I stand for a Canada that is strong and free. I stand up for the average canadian, and I believe in job creation, a sound fiscal policy, electoral reform, honourable dealings with first nations, supporting the less fortunate, peace, environmental sustainability, [info]indy_mp_carolyn's liberal destruction plan and piles of other great stuff.
